I’m Now A Statistic

Posted in About Joede by Joede on the November 26th, 2008

It’s official. I’m a statistic. A number. One of many. I am now living with breast cancer. I’ve told everyone because I need that support and understanding now. But I haven’t told my son. My goofy, loving, adventurous soon to be 14, ready to drive NOW son. I’m the only parent he has ever had. I’m sure he will be the only one from now on because let’s face it, a bald woman with one breast doesn’t attract too many suitors. Upon hearing the news, the first thing I thought of was “Is my son ready?” My daughter will be 3 next month and if I pass away soon, she won’t remember much of me, so you can understand my concern for my son. Two boys he knows, who are brothers, play with him on the football team. Their mom has had brain cancer for about 2 years now. My son felt awful for them. He was shocked at how involved their mom was in football even with the effects of chemo. These boys, though, still argued with their mom and acted as if everything was normal. Which, to them, their mom was still around so everything WAS normal. Our kids are a lot tougher than we give them credit for.

So, I have some plans for the next 2 to 3 years. All involve money so I really need to either get a raise, win the lottery or get BPC into self-sufficiency.

1. Take the kids to Disney (what else did you expect?)
2. Visit Jerusalem.
3. Visit the islands and try parasailing (yeah, I know I can’t swim, shhh.)
4. Find a good man ready to take care of my kids after I’m gone. (This is about my dreams, remember?)

OMG! That’s My Butt!

As my butt (literally) is on Yarn and Fiber’s front page and their blog, it’s a good thing I’ve been working out for the last few months! You can imagine my surprise to see the backside of this women with wild curly hair and, and…her derriere! To think I went to their webite only to find out the proper spelling of Sereknity yarn to make my next big shawl!

The fashion show was for Twist Collective. It was a lot of fun to model these knitting patterns turned into reality. See all three parts of the show here.

Are You A Recessionista? Then Come Visit Black Pearl Creations!

There is a lot of talk of spending less on luxury items due to it being in poor taste. People don’t want to be seen as flaunting their relative wealth or success while many others are losing retirement accounts and jobs. However, in the fashion world, the idea is now to get the stylish, trendy look for less money. There is even a word for such budget-conscious divas: recessionista. But, honestly, after paying $1000 for silk pants, who wants to go back to $20 polyester? No one.

From the research I have conducted, no one is giving advice on where people can shop to still look trendy without breaking the bank and without looking like they shopped at Wal-Mart. Sure. TJMaxx/Marshalls are conducting an “Overnight Event” to extol the virtues of off-price shopping. And you still have second hand shops. The fact of the matter is, these places are not going to have the styles and up to date trends. And let’s face it, trends are still faithfully rolling out. Hooded blanket coats, tweed, cashmere are some of this season’s trends. Check your local, inexpensive big-box store; what do you find?

It’s obvious, everyone wants to go back to the classics without looking old and dated. There is also more emphasis on buying local and sustainability. And you are not going to get that from buying the Chinese made polyester pants at Wal-Mart. You will get it from independent designers such as Black Pearl Creations.

Hand crocheted garments, made in the USA, organic fibers, socially conscious, aware and active. This IS Black Pearl Creations.
